A note duration calculator is most useful when it answers one precise question: how long does this named note last when BPM counts that named reference beat? This route omits bars, loop counts, sample totals, and multi-tap sequences so the ratio stays visible.
Choose the tempo beat before the target note. That one decision prevents the common assumption that every BPM label counts quarter notes.
From the reference beat to a straight value
The supplied beat lasts 60,000 ÷ BPM milliseconds. Note labels are represented as rational fractions of a whole note: a half is 1/2, a quarter is 1/4, an eighth is 1/8, and so on.
The straight target duration equals reference duration multiplied by the target whole-note fraction divided by the reference fraction. If the reference is a quarter and the target is an eighth, the ratio is (1/8) ÷ (1/4) = 1/2. If the target is a half note, the ratio is 2.
This ratio method also works when the supplied pulse is a dotted unit, provided that unit’s 3/2 relationship is included in its reference fraction.
Straight, dotted, and triplet
A dot adds half of the original note to itself, so dotted duration equals straight duration × 3/2. The triplet option on this page means one of three equal notes placed in the time normally occupied by two straight notes of the selected label, so its duration equals straight duration × 2/3.
These modifiers point in opposite directions. A dotted note is longer than its straight value; a triplet member is shorter. Neither changes the session tempo.
Worked dotted-eighth example
Set tempo to 90 BPM, reference beat to quarter note, target to eighth note, and modifier to dotted.
One quarter lasts 60,000 ÷ 90 = 666.666… milliseconds. A straight eighth is half a quarter, or 333.333… milliseconds. Multiplying by 3/2 makes the dotted eighth exactly 500 milliseconds before display formatting. Its mathematical repetition rate is 2 hertz.
The copied summary should say “dotted eighth at 90 quarter-note BPM: 500 ms.” Leaving out “quarter-note” makes the example ambiguous.
A compound-meter contrast
Now imagine 60 BPM where BPM counts a dotted quarter. The reference beat lasts one second. A straight eighth is one third of that dotted-quarter span, approximately 333.333 milliseconds. A dotted eighth is then 500 milliseconds.
The same dotted-eighth duration appeared under different numeric tempo and reference assumptions. That is not a contradiction; it demonstrates why tempo needs a beat unit.
Frequency is a timing reciprocal
Hertz reports how many selected-note durations fit in one second. It can help with modulation controls or repeated cues, but it is not the acoustic frequency of a note name. The calculator does not know pitch, key, oscillator waveform, phase, or device sync behavior.
If a device describes one synchronized cycle differently, follow its manual and verify the result by observation.
Rounding strategy
The page computes ratios before applying visible rounding. Suppose a straight note repeats as an unending decimal; deriving a dotted value from a prematurely rounded screen number can introduce avoidable drift over many cycles.
Use the displayed precision appropriate to the destination while keeping the copied convention. Sample-aligned work belongs on the sample or loop route, where integer rounding can be shown explicitly.
Boundaries
The calculator assumes a constant tempo and equal theoretical subdivisions. It does not model swing percentages, groove templates, rubato, fermatas, tuplets other than the stated three-in-the-time-of-two convention, or notation tied across changing tempo.
It neither renders nor hears sound. A note duration calculated from 90 BPM cannot prove that a recording follows 90 BPM.
Practical workflow
First read the source tempo marking and determine its beat unit. Next choose the straight target and apply one modifier. Review the reference sentence and ratio. Copy the value with milliseconds, note label, modifier, BPM, and beat unit. Finally, test it wherever the timing will be used.

Read the ratio card in order
The result card lists reference duration, straight-target ratio, modifier, and final time in that order. Review it from left to right. If the straight ratio is unexpected, correct the two note units before inspecting the modifier. If the straight value is right but the final value is long or short, check whether dotted or triplet was selected. This separates independent choices and avoids compensating for a wrong unit by entering a false BPM.
