Define the tuplet before calculating
This triplet note calculator uses one explicit convention: three equal notes occupy the time normally taken by two straight notes of the same written value. Enter the duration of one straight note. The page doubles it to form the two-note span, divides that span by three, and reports one triplet member.
Tuplet notation can express other ratios, but they are not hidden behind this CTA. The result here is strictly three-in-the-time-of-two.
The 2/3 member ratio
If one straight note lasts S, two straight notes last 2S. Dividing that span equally among three notes gives:
triplet member = 2S ÷ 3 = S × 2/3.
The complete group lasts 3 × 2S/3 = 2S, exactly matching the original two-note span. The reverse check multiplies one member by 3/2 to recover S.
Worked 480-millisecond example
Enter 480 milliseconds. Two straight durations occupy 960 milliseconds. Dividing 960 by three produces triplet members of 320 milliseconds each. Three members total 960 milliseconds.
One member repeats at 1 ÷ 0.32 = 3.125 hertz. If “eighth note” is supplied as the optional label, the summary identifies 320 ms as one eighth-note triplet member under this convention.
Triplet is shorter, not faster tempo
The member is shorter than the corresponding straight note, but BPM has not changed. Subdivision creates more events inside the same larger span. Calling the 320-ms result a new tempo would discard the relationship that made it a triplet.
If a device wants a frequency or interval, the numeric output may be transferable. Preserve the three-in-two label so it is not mistaken for a free-running rate.
Compare with a dotted value
Dotted and triplet modifiers are sometimes confused because both depart from straight timing. They are reciprocal multipliers: dotted uses 3/2, while this triplet member uses 2/3. Applying one after the other returns the starting duration mathematically.
That does not make the rhythms interchangeable. A dotted value lengthens one note; the triplet construction redistributes a two-note span among three equal members.
Confirm the input is straight
If a source already lists a triplet member, do not enter it as the straight duration unless you intend a second conversion. Use the reverse card to recover the straight value: triplet member × 3/2.
Labeling the input before calculation is more reliable than recognizing a familiar millisecond number without its tempo context.
Relationship to BPM and meter
This page begins with known time, so it requires neither BPM nor meter. When only tempo and note values are known, the note-duration route can derive the straight interval from an explicit reference beat.
Meter can organize a triplet pattern but does not alter the 2/3 arithmetic under the stated convention. Accent, beaming, and notation placement remain editorial decisions outside this tool.
Other tuplets
Five-in-four, seven-in-four, three-in-one, and many other tuplet ratios are possible. A casual “triplet” may also refer to different written values or metric levels. None are calculated here.

Rounding and repeated groups
Calculations keep the exact 2/3 ratio until display. A repeating decimal shown at limited precision may cause drift if multiplied across many groups. Use the unrounded copied value where supported or convert the whole group duration at the final sample rate.
Real performers may place triplet members expressively rather than at equal clock intervals. This arithmetic supplies an ideal grid, not an analysis of feel.

Check the conserved span

If displayed decimals make the two visible totals differ slightly, inspect the unrounded trace before changing an input. The implementation derives both from the same ratio. A destination with coarse timing resolution may still require its own distribution rule across three events.
